College Application Timeline

If you’re not sure when to start preparing for college or what parts of the application are due when, this college application timeline will take you through everything you need to do.

Junior Year: Spring (January – May)

January – February

    • Start researching colleges (academics, majors, size, location, cost, etc.)

    • Begin thinking about what you want in a college

    • Register for spring SAT/ACT (if taking)

March – May

    • Take the SAT or ACT (1st attempt)

    • Ask for teacher recommendation letters (the earlier you ask, the better)

    • Start building your activities list/resume

    • Attend college fairs and info sessions

    • Visit local colleges if possible

 

Junior Year: Summer (June – August)

June – July

    • Finalize your college list (aim for 6–12 schools including safeties, matches, and reaches)

    • Start brainstorming your Common App Personal Statement

    • Register for late summer SAT/ACT if needed

    • Begin drafting essays and supplements

    • Research scholarship opportunities

    • Work, volunteer, or pursue activities that support your interests

August

    • Common App opens August 1

    • Create Common App account and fill out basic info

    • Continue revising essays

    • Note application requirements and deadlines for each school

    • Double check deadlines (early deadlines can be Oct/Nov)

 

Senior Year: Fall (September – November)

September

    • Start supplemental application essays

    • Request official transcripts from your high school

    • Request recommendation letters (if not already done)

    • Take or retake SAT/ACT, if needed

October

    • FAFSA opens (usually October 1)

    • CSS Profile opens (for some private schools)

    • Last opportunity to take the SAT/ACT for Early Decision/Early Action
    • Confirm with your recommenders and make sure they have all the information they need

November

    • Submit any Early Action/Early Decision apps (usually due Nov 1)

    • Send SAT/ACT score reports, if required

    • Finalize and polish your personal statement

 

Senior Year: Winter (December – January)

December

    • Finalize and review all Regular Decision applications

    • Last opportunity to take the SAT/ACT for Regular Decision

    • Submit apps early to avoid last-minute issues

    • Check that all parts are submitted (essays, transcripts, test scores, etc.)

January

    • Confirm receipt of materials with each college

    • Breathe. You did it!
